DMS Features and its Limitations

Likeliness to Recommend

8 /10

What differentiates AWS Database Migration Service from other similar products?

In my experience AWS DMS is better because it supports different type of database migration and it is managing service, so I don’t need to worry too much about infra. Other tools I try was more complex and not work smooth with AWS.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

The thing I like most is setup is very easy, I just create task, and it start migration without lot of manual work. Also, the continuous replication feature saves me much time during cutover.

What do you dislike most about this product?

One drawback I experienced is that MongoDB versions above 8.0 are not supported for migration or data validation. Pre-migration assessment is also limited, as it’s mainly available for certain SQL databases and not for most NoSQL databases. In addition, I noticed that endpoint connections can sometimes fail when integrating with AWS Secrets Manager, which makes troubleshooting more challenging.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

I would recommend checking the database version compatibility before planning your migration, especially if you are working with NoSQL systems like MongoDB. It’s also a good idea to run a pre-migration assessment and test migration tasks to identify gaps early. If you plan to use Secrets Manager for database credentials, make sure to validate endpoint connections in advance and set up proper monitoring so that issues can be caught quickly during the migration process.
