Jeff Hagins’s home in Washington, D.C., is like the Jetsons’ Orbit City house. About 100 physical objects (thermostat, coffee maker, light switches) in his home are connected to sensors and the Internet. Although his smartphone or tablet can act as a remote control, everything is automated and customized.

The “good morning” routine in the Hagins household start with the alarm at 6 a.m., when motion sensors realize his wife and children are up and moving — the lights turn on and the coffee maker starts brewing a fresh pot. His house generates 150,000 discrete events a day.
